Robert Piguet

Today couturier Robert Piguet is better known for two fragrances than for his collections. Bandit and Fracas, both by perfumer Germaine Cellier, live on in legend and fine fragrance counters in reissued versions. Piguet's couture collections are largely forgotten.

Born in the Swiss town of Yverdon in 1901, Piguet was trained in banking. But in 1918, at the age of seventeen, he moved to Paris and gained employment first with Redfern and later with fashion legend Paul Poiret.

In 1933 Piguet founded his own salon, offering both his own creations and works of talented newcomers such as Antonio Castillo (1936-1944), Christian Dior (1938-1942), James Galanos (1947-1948), and Marc Bohan (in the 1950's). Both Hubert Givenchy and Pierre Balmain were also Piguet alumni.

Piguet retired in 1951 and died in 1953. After his death, only the perfume business survived. Today only Bandit and Fracas have survived, now under the direction of Fashion Fragrances & Cosmetics Ltd.
